Dr. Yaşar Tolga Cora receives Science Academy's 2022 Young Scientists Award

The History Department of Boğaziçi University is pleased to announce that our colleague and faculty member, Dr. Yaşar Tolga Cora, has received the Science Academy’s Young Scientist Award for 2022. 

Dr. Cora received his B.A. degree in Sociology and History at Boğaziçi University, graduating with High Honors in 2006. After completing the MA program in Nationalism Studies with Distinction at Central European University in 2007, Cora continued his doctoral studies at the University of Chicago's Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations. In 2016, he was granted his doctorate with a dissertation titled “Transforming Erzurum/Karin: the Social and Economic History of a Multi-Ethnic Ottoman City in the Nineteenth Century.” Dr. Cora worked as a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Michigan and as a lecturer at Istanbul Bilgi University before joining the Department of History at Boğaziçi University in 2019. Dr. Cora’s research interests lie primarily in the social and economic history of the Late Ottoman Empire and Turkey with a focus on the histories of non-Muslim minorities, labor, and migration. He has published the Memoirs of Lieutenant Kalusd Sürmenyan during World War I and the Armenian Deportations in Turkish (Istanbul: Tarih Vakfı Yurt Yayınları, 2015) along with many articles in leading peer-reviewed academic journals of his field. He is the co-editor of the volume The Ottoman East in the Nineteenth Century: Societies, Identities and Politics (London: I.B. Tauris, 2016) and has served on the editorial board of Études arméniennes contemporaines since 2017. 

The Science Academy is an independent non-governmental organization of the leading scientists in Turkey. Every year, the Academy grants the Young Scientist Award to successful academics under the age of 40 in recognition of their achievements in their respective disciplines and their contribution to scientific research in Turkey.
